IIT-JEE Eligibilities: Attempts, Age, Min. %ages and cut off

IIT-JEE 2011 notification has come out and the JEE-2011 forms (both online and offline) are going to be available from 12th November, 2010. This blog post is a part of ongoing series of blog posts on IIT-JEE exam and would like to apprise you about the eligibilities for appearing in JEE-2011 exam. On the line of JEE-2011 eligibilities, this blog post would also tell future IIT-JEE aspirants, the eligibilities for JEE-2012/ JEE-2013.

What are the eligibilities for IIT-JEE-2011?
Following are the eligibilities for appearing in IIT-JEE 2011:
1.0 Number of attempts:
You can appear IIT-JEE only twice in consecutive years. If you had appeared in IIT-JEE in 2009 or earlier, you are not eligible for appearing in JEE-2011.
2.0 Year of qualifying examination:
For appearing in JEE-2011, you should have either passed the qualifying examination on or after 1st October 2009 or would be appearing the qualifying examination in 2011.
If you are appearing in the qualifying examination later than October 1, 2011, you would not be eligible to write JEE-2011.
3.0 Minimum %age in qualifying examination:
You need to obtain minimum 60% marks in aggregate if you are a GE, OBC and DS category student or 55% marks in aggregate if you are a SC, ST and PD category student in the Qualifying Examination.
If your Board awards only letter grades without providing an equivalent percentage of marks on the grade sheet, you should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying the equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of counseling.
4.0 Age requirements: (Max. 24 years GE/OBC, 29 years SC/ST/PD on October 01 of the year of application)
For GE and OBC categories, only those students whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1986, are eligible to appear in JEE-2011. For SC, ST, and PD categories, students who were born on or after October 01, 1981, are eligible.
5.0 Requirement of no previous admission through past JEE:
You should NOT have accepted admission by paying full fees at any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi or ISMU, Dhanbad, through earlier JEE.

List of qualifying examination for IIT-JEE Eligibility:
Following are the qualifying examinations for becoming eligible to appear in JEE Exam:

i) The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi; etc.
ii) Intermediate or two-year Pre-University Examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
iii) Final Examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
iv) General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
v) High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University.
vi) Any Public School/Board/University Examination in India or in any foreign country recognized by the Association of Indian Universities as equivalent to the 10+2 system.
vii) H.S.C. Vocational Examination.
viii) Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Open School with a minimum of five subjects.
ix) 3 or 4-year Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education.
In case the relevant qualifying examination is not a public examination, you must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination at an earlier level.

Important Notes:
(i) If you are appearing in the qualifying examination in the year 2011, on clearing the JEE-2011, you would be provisionally admitted. But you need to provide the proof of having passed the Qualifying Examination with min. %age eligibility, to the concerned institute latest by September 30, 2011.
Therefore, if your school Board declares the results of the qualifying examination after 30th September of each year, you are advised to attempt JEE in the following year.
(ii) All admissions are subject to verification of facts from the original certificates/documents of the candidates. If an applicant is found ineligible at a later date even after admission to an Institute, his/her admission will be cancelled. The decision of the Joint Admission Board of JEE-2009 regarding the eligibility of any applicant shall be final.
(iii) For more clarification in respect of number of attempts and year of passing the qualifying examinations, please refer to FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) available on JEE websites.

Physical Fitness
After clearing IIT-JEE, you will have to submit a Physical Fitness certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner in the prescribed format that will be made available to you at an appropriate time. You will be admitted only if you are physically fit for pursuing a course of study at the participating institutes.

Special Requirements for Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Courses:
If you are opting for these courses, you should make sure that you do not have any form of colour blindness and you need to submit a certificate from a Registered Medical Practitioner to this effect at the time of counseling. Also persons with one-eyed vision are not permitted to work underground.
The standard of visual acuity with or without glasses will be adhered to strictly for candidates seeking admission to Mining Engineering as per DGMS Circular 14 of 1972.

Female Candidates for Mining:
As restricted via Section 46 (1) of the Mines Act, 1952, female candidates are not admitted to Mining Engineering and Mining Machinery Engineering at ISMU, Dhanbad. However the corresponding programme at IIT Kharagpur and IT-BHU, Varanasi, have no such restriction.

You can find the eligibilities for appearing in IIT-JEE 2012 or IIT-JEE 2013 from IIT-JEE eligibilities, as they are hardly going to change.
